William Boyden’s Chronology 1801–1859 of the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction); introduction by Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, Grand Cross, and B. Chris Ruli, 32°, KCCH
What did the Supreme Council do in its earliest years?
This Chronology reconstructs the early operations of the Supreme Council using letters of correspondence, patents, certificates, and other archival materials. The work begins with the Council’s founding in Charleston in 1801 and concludes at the beginning of Albert tenure as Grand Commander in 1859. In approaching this text, it’s helpful to consider that it covers four epochs.
The Beginning Years, 1801–15: The early expansion of Scottish Rite Masonry in the United States from 1801 to 1815, noting the issuance of charters to Lodges of Perfection, Councils, and Consistories in Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans. During this period, Abraham Jacobs conferred degrees in along the East Coast and in the South, distributing rituals and charters as a matter of course. Illustrious Brothers Frederick Dalcho, 33°, and Emmanuel De La Motta, 33°, Treasurer General, contributed significantly to the Rite's development by exposing Joseph Cerneau’s irregular bodies, and by their distribution of various manifestos, constitutions, and printed works.
Early Formative Years, 1815–25: This period documents the formation of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and the ongoing struggle against Cerneauism, as well as the Mother Supreme Council’s outreach to Scottish Rite Masons abroad.
The Hardship Years, 1826–44: During this period the Supreme Council, like most American Masonic organizations, suffered a loss of membership in the wake of the Morgan Affair. The correspondence reveals ongoing activity in the Southern Jurisdiction.
The Mid-Formative Years, 1844–59: Focuses on the emergence of Dr. Mackey as a key leader in Scottish Rite Masonry, the growing relationship between the Northern Masonic and Southern Jurisdictions, the dissolution of Cerneau-affiliated bodies, the creation of the Grand Consistory in Louisiana, the expansion of the Rite, and early correspondence between Mackey and Pike, who joined the Scottish Rite in 1853. The Chronology ends in 1859, the year Pike was elected Sovereign Grand Commander.
