Brent Morris, 33, G.C.

The insightful articles in this book focus on a type of Freemasonry that has long been a subject of controversy. Known as “Cerneauism,” it refers to Scottish Rite bodies which derived authority from Joseph Cerneau (1763–1840/45), a Frenchman who was the charter master of La Temple des Vertus Theologalis No. 103, a Pennsylvania lodge in Havana, Cuba. He fled to New York after being expelled from Cuba in 1806, after fleeing there from the slave rebellion in Haiti in 1802. The central issue with Cerneauism is the question of authority, i.e., the right to create and govern Masonic organizations. Masonic bodies worldwide maintain that the right and authority to create and preside over rites, orders, and systems must stem from a just and regular succession, with adherence to applicable constitutions, laws, and statutes. Cerneauism was a challenge to the concept of regularity because Joseph Cerneau did not personally possess any authority within the Scottish Rite, nor did he accept its governing constitutions. In spite of this, his self-created “supreme council” both flourished and claimed many prominent members who made valuable contributions to Freemasonry.

In addition to the articles is a first-ever reproduction and translation of Cerneau’s original patent, and a complete facsimile edition of Joseph M’Cosh’s _ Documents upon Sublime Freemasonry_ (1823), a book which first investigated Cerneau’s claims, and led to a “Masonic war.”

Hardbound (6 1/4" x 9 1/4") with decorative covers, printed in two colors; illustrated, indexed; 620 pages.

Author

Number of Pages

Book Type

Arturo de Hoyos, 33, G.C. and S. He was never seen again, and it was soon claimed that he was "murdered by the Masons." This resulted in an intense period of anti-Masonry which lasted until 1842. At the height of this, Rev. David Bernard, an ex-Mason, published "Light on Masonry," which was the largest exposure of Masonic rituals ever published on America soil. The work ran into five editions, the last being the largest and most complete.

This book includes early versions of the rituals of the Blue Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Order of the Holy Cross, as well as anti-Masonic committee reports, and letters from seceding Masons. Although it was originally intended as a hostile work, its contents help us understand and trace the evolution of Masonic ritual.

This special reprint includes a full photographic reproduction of the fifth edition, plus, a 200-page introduction which provides a brief history of Masonic origins, provides examples of the earliest known Masonic rituals, traces the phenomenon of Masonic exposures, explains how and where Rev. Bernard received the rituals he published, and notes all the important changes and additions in each edition. It also reveals that anti-Masons made "infamous interpolations" to the ritual texts in an effort to discredit the fraternity.

Five new appendices complete the work: (1) The "Missing" Scottish Rite Degrees, from authentic contemporary sources; (2) The "Missing Degree" of Avery Allyns "Ritual of Freemasonry" (1831); (3) The Engravings from Avery Allyns "Ritual of Freemasonry"; (4) The Rituals of "Female Masonry"; (5) A Bibliography of the 1829 editions of "Light on Masonry."

Hardbound in decorative covers with dust jacket (10" x 6 3/4"), profusely illustrated; 807 pages.

Author

Book Category

Number of Pages

Book Type

ISBN

DeHoyos

History & Biography

807

Hard Cover

978-9708749-5-5

lodge-of-the-double-headed-eagle-two-centuries-of-scottish-rite-freemasonry-in-americas-southern-jurisdiction
Lodge Of The Double-Headed Eagle, Two Centuries Of Scottish Rite Freemasonry In Americas Southern Jurisdiction

Scottish Rite Research Society membership discount will be applied at checkout

Dr. William L. All extant Masonic records have been consulted and using this meta-data, a comprehensive reconstruction emerges, revealing that Étienne Morin was a founding masonic figure in Saint Domingue and creator of his own high degree system, that operated for a time as a defacto Grand Lodge. Explore the symbolic rituals worked throughout the life of the colony and understand exactly how the most widespread symbolic masonic ritual, the Scottish Rite craft ritual was created and from what sources. Read the complete extant correspondence of Order of the Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret in Saint Domingue, published for the first time.

Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, Grand Cross, KYCH, is Grand Archivist and Grand Historian of the Supreme Council, 33°, Southern Jurisdiction, Washington, DC, and a member of the executive staff at the House of the Temple.
